Periodical dramas have been part of Hindi cinema for many decades be it Black and White or color films, the period films have bought history from the era of Maratha Empire, Moghul Empire and British. The thing which makes these films more appealing is the costumes and huge sets.
The filmmakers have to face big challenges in making such films as they have to bring the exact history on the big screen. Every small element of the film counts as it shows what exactly happened in the era.

Bajirao Mastani (2015)
Based on Peshwa Bajirao and his second wife Mastani. In 18 century the court of Maratha Kingdom needs Peshwa and Bajirao is nominated for it. He wins everyone’s heart by his skills and becomes Peshwa, years later he is married to Kashibai.
While going for a war a woman from Bundelkhand asks his help and reveals herself as Mastani daughter of the Rajput king, impressed by her skills Bajirao helps her fight her enemies and gifts her his dagger during the Holi festival not knowing that it’s a symbol of marriage.
The Legend Of Bhagat Singh (2002)
As a child, Bhagat Singh sees a lot of injustice done to Indians by the British government during the regime of East India Company. He takes a solemn to free India after the Jallianwala Baug Massacre. At a very young age, he decides to be a revolutionary.
But ends up in jail, his father manages to free him from prison and get him married. But Bhagat Singh runs from the house leaving a note saying his love for the country comes first.
Jodha Akbar (2008)
Jodha daughter of Raja Bharmal from Amer is to be married to Raja Ratan Singh who will heritage the crown of her father after his marriage. Her cousin Sujamal is upset over losing the throne and joins their rebels.
When Mogul Emperor is about to attack Amer Raja Bharmal in order to make peace puts a proposal of Jodha to marry Akbar to which he agreed as it would bring strong alliance between Mughals and Rajput. In order to avoid marriage, Jodha proposes to Akbar that she won’t change her religion and wants a temple to be built for her.
Akbar has no hesitation in this. After their marriage, Akbar’s nanny conspires against Jodha when Sujamal comes to meet her in private. Jodha leaves his kingdom after Akbar doubts her character after the truth is out Akbar goes to take Jodha who tells him that first, he should have a change of relation in his kingdom.
Mughal E Azam (1960)
This historical period film created a lot of history. It took about 16 years to complete. The song Jab Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya was made on budget of 10 Lakhs when the total budget of films those days would be 1 lakh.
The film narrates the story of Mogul Emperor Baadshah Akbar and his son Salim who is possibly going to take his throne after him. But tiff arises between the two when Salim falls in love with a courtesan and goes against his father.
In the Champaner district In British rule, Captain Russell has imposed heavy taxes on the drought villagers. They decide to go to meet Raja Puran Singh where a cricket match is taking place amongst British officers.
Bhuvan gets in an argument with an officer where captain Russel tells him that he will wave their taxes for 3 years if they win in the game of cricket against them. But if they lose they will have to pay three times the taxes.
Bhuvan agrees to this and all the villagers go against him as they don’t even know anything about the game and how can they defeat the Britishers.
Mangal Pandey: The Rising Sun (2005)
Aamir Khan gave four years of his career for this film to prepare for this role after back to back releases Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai in 2001.Mangal Pandey the first revolutionary who went against the British Army.
He served as an officer in the British army but when he found that the British army has cheated on him and fellow Indian officer’s in the British army by making them open the cover of their guns in the mouth which were filled with fat of Pigs and Cows.
Emperor Chandragupta Maurya, of the Maurya empire, has decided to embrace Jainism and abdicate the throne of the empire in favor of his son Bindusara. But his grandson, Prince Asoka, claims his sword. The old emperor explains that this sword is evil and the sword demands blood and destruction.
Umrao Jaan (1981)
In 1840 a girl named Amiran is kidnapped and sold to a brothel in Lucknow. She is turned into a courtesan and named Umrao Jaan. Nawab Sultan falls in love with her but the relationship ends when she finds he only wants to marry her to please her family.
Umrao then finds love in a bandit Faiz Ali and elopes with him. But returns back to Lucknow after he is killed by the cops.
The Bandit Queen (1994)
Based on the life of Dacoit turned Politician Phoolan Devi. At the age of five, she has a child marriage to Puttilal but runs away as her husband is abusive. While growing she faced sexual abuse many times as she refused to sleep with upper-caste men.
Later she joined a Dacoit gang led by Gujjars where she finds sympathy in Vikram Mallaha who led the gang with Phoolan after killing Babu Gujjar who frequently raped her.
After Vikram is assassinated by Thakur Shri Ram and rapes Phoolan she goes to Maan Singh an old friend of Vikram. Maan Singh then brings another big gang led by Bab Mustakim and starts to revenge against the higher cast Thakur’s.
The most controversial period drama to date which faced many backlashes as few religious committes believed it messed the history of Rani Padmavati.
In the 13th Century, Allauddin Khilji gifts a full Ostrich in place of a feather to his uncle Jalaluddin Khilji and asks permission to marry his daughter Mehrunissa.
While in Sinhala Rani Padmavati attacks Maharawal Ratan Singh mistaken to be a Deer. Ratan Singh was in search of lost pearls of his wife. Ratan Singh gets married to Padmavati and takes her in his palace making her his second wife.
His priest Raghav Chetan tries to see them in an intimate moment and is fired from the empire. He joins Allauddin Khliji who has taken the Mogul empire after killing his uncle. Raghav tells him about Padmavati’s beauty and Allauddin wants her for himself at any cost.
Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi (2019)
Manikarnika born in Varanasi when Dixit a minister in Jhansi princely state sees her, he proposes her marriage to Gangadhar Rao prince of Jhansi. Sadashiv Rao plots a plan along with British officers to conquer Jhansi as he is promised a stake in it after conquering Jhansi.
After the birth of Lakshmi, Sadashiv Rao sees his position in danger and poison the holy water during the naming ceremony of the child following which he passes away and also leaves Gangadhar Rao on death bed.
After the death of Gangadhar Rao. The East India Company decides to conquer on Jhansi as there is no male ruler. But Lakshmi bai decides to take the throne on herself and fight for Jhansi.
